Telegram SetupOverview

Telegram Setup

AdTarget uses a Telegram bot to detect when users join your channel. This section guides you through:

How It Works

  1. You create a Telegram bot using @BotFather (free)
  2. Connect in AdTarget by entering your bot token
  3. Add the bot to your channel as an administrator
  4. AdTarget auto-detects the channel and begins tracking

Why a Bot?

Telegram bots can receive events when users join channels where they’re admins. AdTarget uses this to:

  • Detect new channel members instantly
  • Match joins to website visitors
  • Send conversion events to Meta

Privacy: Your bot only sees join/leave events. It cannot read messages. When a user joins, the bot receives their Telegram user ID, first name, last name, username, and the invite link they used (if any) from the webhook payload for attribution purposes.

Requirements

  • A Telegram account
  • A Telegram channel (public or private)
  • Admin access to the channel
  • The bot must have the “Invite Users via Link” admin permission (required for tracked invite link generation)

No coding required. Setup takes 5-10 minutes total.

Quick Start

  1. Create your bot (2 minutes)
  2. Connect your channel (3 minutes)

FAQ

Can I use one bot for multiple channels?

Yes! A single bot can monitor multiple channels. Add it as admin to each channel you want to track.

Does the bot post messages?

No. The AdTarget bot only listens for join/leave events. It never posts messages to your channel.

Can I use my existing bot?

Yes, if you have admin access to the bot. Just enter its token in AdTarget. Note that a bot can only be connected to one AdTarget account at a time.
